There’s something powerful about caring for your own skin with something you’ve made by hand.
This winter balm is one of those simple creations that does exactly what it promises: it softens, protects, and restores overworked hands and tired feet. I originally made it as a small gift for friends—and quickly realized it was just as much a gift to myself.
It’s especially loved by dancers and yoga teachers, who’ve shared how deeply nourishing it feels on sore joints, dry cuticles, and winter-weary skin. I reach for it on elbows, knees, heels, and anywhere that needs a little extra care and attention in the colder months.

And beyond function, there’s something meaningful about anointing yourself with something you created. It becomes a small ritual. A pause. A moment of self-acknowledgment in the middle of winter.
How might you make this lovely winter balm? Keep reading!

Winter Balm Recipe
(Small-Batch, High-Quality)
Using a kitchen scale, measure the following organic ingredients into a clean saucepan:
- 15 g beeswax
- 30 g shea butter
- 30 g sweet almond oil
- 30 g calendula-infused sunflower oil
- 30 g rosehip oil
Using low heat, gently warm the mixture until everything is fully melted and blended into one smooth oil.
Remove from heat, then add:

- 5 drops vanilla absolute
Stir gently and pour into clean glass containers. Let cool completely before sealing.
✨ Yield coming soon — I’ll be making this exact recipe again this week and will update with final volume.

No Scale? No Problem
If you don’t have a kitchen scale:
- 1 tablespoon ≈ 15 g
This recipe is forgiving. It doesn’t need perfection to be wonderful. Great ingredients do most of the work.

Why This Balm Works So Well
This formula combines:
- Beeswax for protection
- Shea butter for deep moisture
- Calendula for skin soothing
- Rosehip for regeneration
- Lavender, rose & vanilla for nervous system comfort and warmth
It’s grounding, floral, gentle, and quietly luxurious.
Where to Find Ingredients
A well-stocked health food store in Montreal, like Marché Bleuet is a great place to source high-quality oils, wax, and essential oils. Verveine et cie in Cowansville is a beautiful store in the Eastern Townships.

A Balm That Becomes a Ritual
These balms make thoughtful winter gifts, especially when paired with:
- A handwritten note
- A warm pair of socks
- A small seasonal reflection
But they’re just as meaningful when you keep one for yourself.
A small daily ritual.
A moment of care.
A reminder that you matter.
